T he British and Americans have never gotten along very well where the English language is concerned. British mockery and indignation over what Americans were doing with and to the language began long before Independence, but after that it blossomed into a fully-fledged, ill-spirited, relentless attack that is still going on today. The conservative British politician and Brexit supporter Jacob Rees-Mogg, for example, has been  defended  as “one who dares to eschew the current, Americanized, mode of behaviour, speech, and dress.” In our own time, as has been the case for more than two centuries, fights about nationalism easily turn into skirmishes over language.

How to improve your Oral Skills

Imagen
1- Sorround yourself by English. Try to listen to English as much as possible: people, TV, radio internet, etc. 2-Don't be afraid to make mistakes when speaking as mistakes are part of the learning process. Concentrate on communication.  3-Make the most of your opportunities to speak English: native speakers, Skype, specific forums, teachers... 4- Don't forget the other skills (reading and writing) as they area a great source of grammar and vocabulary. 5-Stick to simple structure if you are not confident enough. When speaking, it is easy to make mistakes. 6- Record yourself to listen to your voice speaking in English. It will help you assess your progress, particulary in terms of pronunciation. 7-Learn new structures and vocabulary and make a conscious effort to use them for the first time. 8-Ask your interlocutor to repeat or tell them you don´t understand. They will understand. 9-Learn from your mistakes and keep in mind that learning a new language is a life-long process.

The benefits of studying English

Imagen
 - Increase your confidence Overcoming the insecurity that comes with speaking English at the beginning of the learning process is an act of courage. And you will see how that courage is also recognised by those around you. - It will open your mind Learning English and understanding other people will also help you understand the world and the reality around you from a different perspective. Speaking a language and being part of a certain culture implies seeing the world in a concrete way. - You will master the international language - Multiply your job prospects We already know that Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world, but it is rarely spoken outside of China. We know that Spanish has more native speakers than English (and we love it because we love our language). Learning English should not be associated with boredom. On the contrary. Watching series and films (in the original version with English subtitles), listening to music (reviewing the lyrics), ...

What makes a good English teacher?

Imagen
When I was in high school, my chemistry teacher (whose nam e I won't quote) used to come into class shuffling, and mumble quietly while performing experiments we didn't understand. He would get angry when we lost interest and started talking, or if someone asked a question that he was supposed to have already answered. If I look back now, I am sure he was a very competent chemist, and probably passionate about this branch of science , but he was not good at connecting with students or making the subject relevant to us. I admit that we were probably not the most attentive or motivated students either; I gave up chemistry as soon as I could. Being a good teacher of any subject requires certain skills, but what are the characteristics you should look for in an English-speaking one? After talking to current and former students, a nd based on my own experience of language learning, I consider what a good English language teacher is: - Someone who knows how to do their job - Someon...

Struggles of being a brit in America

Imagen
